Something of a cult red, Luddite Shiraz is a big, bold, strapping Shiraz that takes no prisoners. The sort of thing you find more often in the Barossa Valley than the Cape, it has iodine, vanilla and lavender aromas, blackberry, fig and mulberry fruit, supple, enveloping tannins and plenty of body, alcohol and concentration. A one-off in South Africa. 2024-30

Production back up to 9,600 bottles as vines slowly recover from the drought. Includes small portions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Mourvèdre. 10% of stalks added back before maturation lasting 24 months in barrel, 15% new. This vintage has an alcohol of 13.62% – low for this wine. It’s hardly underdone but it doesn’t have quite the same fruit power that previous vintages have offered. A touch of smoky reduction before red and black berries, rose, fynbos, fennel and pepper on the nose while the palate is well structured with pure fruit, quite tart acidity and crunchy tannins. A gateway for Luddite newbies?

Over het oogstjaar en de wijn
Finally, a year of good rains preceding harvest. This resulted in better crops and a little more vigour in our vineyards. As a result of these weather conditions, the grapes were riper at a lower sugar level even though they were picked a week later than 2020. We picked the two blocks a week apart and both batches were fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and a small portion was fermented in open fermenters. We fermented slightly cooler to retain more fruit expression and give more time on the skins to build up structure. We pressed and allowed the wine to finish malolactic fermentation in tank before racking to barrel. After 2 years in barrel, we made up the final blend using a small amount of Mourvèdre and Cabernet Sauvignon from our own vineyards to fill out the mid-palate. 100% French Oak of which 15% was new.

Tasting Note by Niels
Appearance:  Dark red in colour with bright red hues towards the edges.
Nose:  Dark brooding feel, cinnamon, touch of cigar box with violets and mace on the finish.
Palate:  Bold juicy fruit on entry with fresh tannin grip on mid-pallet. Hints of aniseed followed by dry spices to balance the fruit. The finish is long and dry and certainly needs a lot more time.
