Tasting Notes:
Brimming with flavours of wild blueberry and dark plum that lead, into hints of tomato leaf, aromatic allspice and a floral complexity. The full-bodied meatiness of this wine, has a freshness and long finish that intertwines with its fine grain tannins. The IRON Syrah with its natural extract, deep perfume and round mid-palate, is always the most open and attractive of the three single soil Syrahs in its youth. Can be aged 10-20 years. Andrea Mullineux
Maturation:
This wine was aged for 12 months in French oak 500L barrels, of which 50% was new, followed by another 10 months in 2000L Foudre and eight months of aging in bottle before its release.
Tim Atkin SA Special Report, 96/100
Always served last of the trio of soil-specific Syrahs from the Mullineux, Iron is the most shuttered, dense and backward wine, or, if you prefer, the most Cornas-like. Compact, chewy and made to age, but there’s a lot of charm below the tannic carapace. Ferrous and dark, with damson and black fig intensity. 2024-32
Greg Sherwood MW, 97/100
On the nose there are pronounced notes of scorched earth, tapenade, broody black berry and black cherry fruits together with some red fruit brightness. The slightly reductive palate boasts a great depth of fruit with rich round tannins leading the way structurally. A wine that always has the highest natural extract but like this 2020 release, shows itself with the most generosity, harmony and balance. In common with both the Granite and the Schist Syrah expressions, this wine definitely has its own very unique personality derived from its terroir and typified by its very Northern Rhone physique, its savoury cured meat and irony complexity, the bright fresh acids and the suave powdery tannins. Tasted over three days, this is the wine that unfurled and fanned its peacock tail the most. Another very age worthy expression that is a true testament to the Mullineux’s winemaking prowess. Drink from 2024 to 2040+.

Flinty reduction before red and black berries, cured meat and white pepper on the nose. The palate is full but balanced – great depth of fruit, bright acidity and firm but fine tannins. Rich and round upfront but ends dry and nicely grippy.

Kenmerkende top Syrah van een graniet bodem bij de Paardeberg.
Complexe, intrigerende blend op basis van oude stokken chenin blanc.
